DIMAPUR: Expressing deep concern over the continued disappearance and reported captivity of six Naga individuals from Konsaram village in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, Namri Nchang MLA has called for unity and peaceful coexistence amid rising tensions.
Referring to a report published in The Indian Express on May 18 under the headline “The six Naga men not in custody: KIM”, Namri said the situation began on May 13 following the killing of three church leaders, which disturbed peace and communal harmony in the region. He noted that while mediation efforts led to the safe release of 14 individuals on May 17, the whereabouts of six Nagas, including Harup village pastor Rev. Manu Thiumai, remain unknown. Namri stated that taking civilian hostages or unlawfully detaining innocent persons was against humanitarian values, constitutional principles and traditional customs, warning that such acts only deepen mistrust and endanger communal harmony. Appealing to both Naga and Kuki communities, Namri urged all sides to uphold peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and dialogue. He called upon those responsible to ensure the immediate and safe release of the missing individuals, while also urging the Governments of Manipur and India to intensify search operations and conduct a fair, transparent and time-bound inquiry.
Further, he appealed to civil society organisations, church bodies and community leaders to cooperate in peace-building efforts. He also urged the people of Peren district to continue upholding peace and harmony despite the prevailing situation elsewhere, stressing that any individual involved in unlawful activities must be dealt with strictly according to law. Namri maintained that collective efforts were essential to restore trust and ensure lasting peace in the region.
