LUCKNOW, MAY 23 (PTI): Punjab Kings kept their playoff hopes alive with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in their Indian Premier League clash on Saturday, powered by skipper Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten century and opener Prabhsimran Singh’s fluent fifty.
Opting to bat first, Lucknow Super Giants posted a competitive 196 for six in their 20 overs. Opener Josh Inglis provided the foundation with a well-compiled 72 off 44 balls, striking nine boundaries and two sixes. In the middle overs, Ayush Badoni added quick runs with a brisk 43 off 18 deliveries, while Abdul Samad chipped in with an unbeaten 37 off 20 balls to push the total close to 200. Punjab’s bowlers, however, ensured the target remained within reach, with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (2/25) and pacer Marco Jansen (2/33) leading the attack.
In reply, Punjab Kings showcased intent from the outset. Prabhsimran Singh set the tone with a stroke-filled 69 off 39 balls, keeping the chase on track. The spotlight, however, belonged to skipper Shreyas Iyer, who played a captain’s knock, smashing an unbeaten 101 off just 51 deliveries. His innings was marked by authoritative stroke play and precise timing, ensuring Punjab never lost momentum.
The chase was completed in emphatic fashion, with PBKS reaching 200 for three in 18 overs, sealing victory with ease. While Lucknow’s bowlers tried to break through, they struggled to contain the aggressive batting display. Mohammed Shami picked up two wickets but lacked support from the rest of the attack.
This win not only highlighted Punjab’s batting depth but also underlined Iyer’s leadership with the bat. The result keeps PBKS firmly in contention for a playoff berth, while Lucknow Super Giants will need to regroup quickly to stay in the race.
