WASHINGTON, MAY 24 (AGENCIES): A gunman was shot dead after opening fire near a security checkpoint outside the White House on Saturday, triggering panic and a brief lockdown of the presidential complex.
Federal officials said the incident occurred while US president Donald Trump was present at the White House. Journalists and visitors in the area reportedly ran for cover after hearing sustained gunfire.
The United States Secret Service said it was unclear whether a bystander was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the exchange of fire. No Secret Service personnel were injured and Trump was not affected. The suspect was identified by US media outlets as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who reportedly had a history of mental health issues.
According to reports, Best approached a White House gate near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW shortly after 6 pm local time before pulling out a revolver and firing multiple rounds toward officers.
Secret Service personnel immediately returned fire, fatally wounding him. He later died at a hospital. At least one bystander was seriously injured. Trump later praised the “swift and professional action” of law enforcement officials in a social media post.
