MUMBAI, MAY 24 (IANS): Jofra Archer delivered a match-winning all-round performance as Rajasthan Royals (RR) sealed their playoff berth with a 30-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in a must-win clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
Promoted to No. 7, Archer smashed a quickfire 32 off 15 balls, rescuing RR from 119/5 to a competitive 205/8. His innings, featuring three sixes and a boundary, provided crucial momentum after Dhruv Jurel’s steady 38 and Dasun Shanaka’s 29. Later, Archer spearheaded the bowling attack, claiming 3/17, including the prized wickets of Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, and Hardik Pandya.
RR’s batting began shakily, losing openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (27) and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (4) early. Skipper Riyan Parag fell cheaply, leaving the side at 54/3 after the Powerplay. Jurel and Shanaka rebuilt with a 50-plus stand before Shanaka was run out. Jurel top-scored with 38, while late cameos from Archer, Ravindra Jadeja (19), and Nandre Burger (10) lifted RR past 200. Shardul Thakur (2/41) and Deepak Chahar (2/43) were the most successful MI bowlers.
MI’s reply faltered early as Archer dismissed Rohit Sharma for a duck and bowled Naman Dhir with a superb delivery. Ryan Rickelton (12) and Tilak Varma (3) fell cheaply, leaving MI struggling at 38/4. Suryakumar Yadav (60 off 42) and Will Jacks (33) revived hopes with a 63-run stand, followed by Pandya’s aggressive 34.
However, Archer returned to dismiss Pandya, halting MI’s momentum. Burger then removed Suryakumar with a sharp caught-and-bowled effort, ending MI’s challenge. Despite flashes of resistance, MI finished at 175/9 in 20 overs. Archer’s 3/17 was complemented by Burger (2/43), Brijesh Sharma (2/26), and Yash Raj Punja (2/44). Their disciplined effort on a slowing pitch ensured RR’s defense of 205 remained intact. With this victory, RR concluded the league stage with 16 points from 14 matches, clinching the fourth playoff spot. They now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator at New Chandigarh on Wednesday.
