Mumbai, May 25 (IANS): Two police officers were left seriously injured and admitted to the ICU of Bombay Hospital after a speeding Mercedes allegedly rammed into them at a Marine Drive checkpoint in Mumbai late Sunday night, with the driver fleeing the scene before being arrested Monday morning. The accused, identified as 29-year-old Nihal Solanki, a resident of Panchavati, Nashik, allegedly accelerated his luxury car instead of slowing down when officers attempted to stop him at the checkpoint, knocking down Constable Krishnakant Mishra and Constable Rathod, both attached to the Marine Drive police station. Marine Drive police launched an immediate search following the incident and arrested Solanki in Nalasopara on Monday morning. “Solanki is now in custody as the investigation continues,” an official said.
Such incidents involving high-end vehicles in Mumbai are not uncommon. Earlier in February, a minor boy driving a high-end car lost control and rammed into another vehicle inside the Coastal Road tunnel, seriously injuring the occupant of the other car. In December last year, a Mercedes rammed into a pillar on the Coastal Road, causing a pile-up involving two cabs with passengers sustaining minor injuries. The recurring nature of such incidents has once again raised concerns over reckless driving and enforcement of traffic regulations in the city.
