DIMAPUR: The Secheku Women Block Level Federation (SWBLF) held its 2nd annual general body meeting at Pholami Village, Phek district, on May 23, attended by around 350 SHG members, village leaders and elders from across the linguistically diverse Secheku area.
Former executive director of Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS), Vechulou Kanuo, graced the occasion as guest speaker and commended the federation for its continuous efforts in uplifting rural women. She highlighted visible improvements in cleanliness, leadership, economic activities and cultural participation among women since the establishment of SHGs in the region. Stressing the federation’s motto “Empowering Economies, Enriching Lives”, she said true empowerment goes beyond income, encompassing education, health, lifestyle, confidence and respect, which in turn strengthen families and inspire children.
Recalling the history of SHGs in the region, Kanuo noted that CWWS began 25 SHGs in 2002, providing literacy programmes, small savings schemes and technical support through NABARD and Neida. Today, 586 SHGs under CWWS have been adopted by the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM). She encouraged women to continue their efforts, stressing that even small contributions can have significant impact, while advising unity, financial transparency and balance between SHG activities and family responsibilities.
The programme began with invocation by Cuvelu Nakro of Pholami Baptist Church, followed by a special song from Gidera VLO, Gidemi. SWBLF president Wedele Tsuhah welcomed the dignitaries and appreciated the unity among members. Kulaveyi Sakhamo, head GB of Pholami Village, lauded the harmony of the Secheku area and acknowledged the progress of women through SHGs.
Inspiring success stories were shared by Lila Lea of Chobama Village, who established a vegetable supply business and introduced digital banking services in her village, and Welhizou Wetsah of Chizami Village, who started piggery and poultry businesses with NSRLM support. Both women expressed gratitude to NSRLM for enabling financial independence and confidence.
Neikurayi Curhah, BPM BMMU Chizami Block, highlighted key achievements of NSRLM. Awards were presented to outstanding members including Dzuthonolu Nakro (Best Master Book Keeper), Menyieteu Venuh (Best Village Facilitator), Koneilou Tsuzuh (Best Community Service Provider), and Veravolu Lohe (Best Community Resource Person – Enterprise Promotion). Kechunu SHG of Chizami Village and Vitao VLO of Zhavame Village were recognised as Best SHG and Best VLO respectively.
The second session, led by Khrowateu Akami, manager SWBLF, focused on deliberations and adoption of new agendas. Zhonolü Lohe was elected secretary of SWBLF till 2028. The programme concluded with benediction by Cütolü Vadeo, treasurer SWBLF.
