Manipur Congress apprises NHRC on human right violations in state

IMPHAL, MAY 27: Opposition Manipur Congress on Wednesday brought to the notice of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) the recent human rights violations in the state which included among others the persisting hostage stand-off.
A delegation of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) led by Congress Legislator Party (CLP) leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh submitted the complaint to the NHRC in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.
The delegation also met with Justice V Ramasubramanian, former Supreme Court judge and currently the chairperson of NHRC.
The complainant, Keisham Meghachandra Singh, along with the other members of the delegation, presented the complaint on the prevailing human rights violations in the state to the chairperson in detail.
The complaint was officially registered and received in the commission, the MPCC said, in a release.
The complaint was made on three major incidents which were still prevailing in the state for the last few weeks on human rights violations arising out of hostage and abduction of civilians (six Nagas and 14 Kukis), ongoing economic blockade on national highways, and non-availability of LPG cooking gas and essential items and medicines in the state due to economic blockade on national highways in the state.
In the complaint, the opposition Congress pressed the NHRC to take up the complains with the pertinent authorities to ensure that the state chief minister presents detailed reports, in public, and also a copy of the detailed reports, if published, be provided to the complainant, on the whereabouts of the missing persons within 24 hours of the receipt of the communication from the NHRC. It also sought to direct the Manipur chief secretary, for a safe release of all the abducted persons (6 Nagas and 14 Kukis) in Manipur within 24 hours of the receipt of the communication from the NHRC.
It further insisted that the NHRC direct the Director General of Police, Manipur for a swift and effective action against the illegal abductors or anyone involved in the illegal abduction of the said persons by arresting them and registering FIR(s) within 24 hours of the receipt of the communication from NHRC.
The complaints further sought directions to the state chief secretary to table action taken reports on the incidents involving the abduction of 20 persons (6 Nagas and 14 Kukis), the incidents of economic blockade on national highways, and the non-availability of LPG cooking gas, essential items and medicines in Manipur due to the blockade, within 24 hours of receipt of communication.
It also sought directions to the state DGP to table action taken reports on arrests made and FIRs registered so far against any persons involved in the hostage and abduction incidents.
The NHRC officially registered the complaint, the release added.
The Congress delegation led by CLP leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh also included AICC member advocate N Bupenda Meitei, senior state Congress leader Wahidur Rahman, MPCC OBC Cell chairperson Sakir Ahmed, its SC Cell chairperson A Oken Singh, its Labour Cell chairperson Toijam Lokendro Singh, woman Congress leader Sanjita Lisham and Youth Congress leader L Piyari Devi.
