CSOs condemn sexual assault on minor; demand justice for victim

DIMAPUR: Several civil society organisations have strongly condemned the incident of sexual assault on a minor girl in Dimapur, terming it heinous, unacceptable and a grave violation of human dignity and child rights.
ASTD: In a press release, Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) president, Ningsangwaba and general secretary, K. Tsukti Longchar expressed profound shock and grief over the recent sexual assault of a minor and placed on record its unequivocal condemnation of the alleged act. Terming sexual violence against children as among the most unacceptable crimes, ASTD said such brutality violates the dignity, safety and future of the most vulnerable and strikes at the moral fabric of society. The organisation rejected any attempt to normalise or conceal such acts and asserted that perpetrators deserve the fullest moral and social condemnation. ASTD further urged that medical care, emotional support and trauma counselling be arranged for the survivor and her family with sensitivity to their privacy and dignity. It called upon society to extend compassion, care and solidarity to help them cope with the tragedy. ASTD described sexual violence against minors as not only a crime against an individual child but an attack on the conscience of society. It appealed to all members of the community to unite against such heinous acts and uphold values of humanity, respect and protection for every child.
DWT: Dimapur Watsü Telongjem (DWT) has strongly condemned the sexual assault of a minor, describing it as a grave violation of law, humanity and the dignity of children. In a statement, DWT president, Kenyangerla and general secretary, Wangshikokla said violence against children is unacceptable and must be met with zero tolerance. It stressed that such acts erode the moral fabric of society and called for justice, effective action and community solidarity to ensure protection of the vulnerable. The organisation further urged society to extend compassion and support to the survivor and her family, while demanding that authorities take stringent measures to prevent recurrence of such crimes.
NSF: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault and physical abuse of a minor girl in Dimapur by O. Watimeren Jamir and his alleged associates.Expressing shock and grief, NSF president, Mteisuding and general secretary, Kenilo Kent termed the act as heinous, barbaric and inhumane, stating that such crimes have no place in a civilized society. The Federation conveyed its deepest solidarity with the victim and her family, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity and well being of every child. NSF urged law enforcement authorities to conduct a fair, prompt and impartial investigation and ensure strict legal action against the accused and all individuals allegedly involved. It stressed that justice must be delivered without delay and accountability enforced.NSF also called upon society to create a safe environment for children, uphold justice and protect the vulnerable.
ASU: Angami Students’ Union (ASU) has strongly condemned the recent sexual assault of a minor in Dimapur and termed the act egregious and utterly incompatible with a civilized society. In a condemnation note, ASU president, Diezevisie Nakhro and general secretary Rajuselie Chücha, stated that such reprehensible acts were foreign to the land and represented a toxic culture that had no place in Nagaland. It expressed alarm that instead of progressing in modern times, society was witnessing a descent into moral depravity, intensifying fear and anxiety among the public and student community. Declaring that no individual has the right to strip away another’s dignity, ASU said it would never remain a silent spectator and would intervene against anyone intending to violate human dignity. The Union extended solidarity to the victim and her family and called upon law enforcement and judicial authorities to expedite the legal process to ensure the highest statutory punishment for the perpetrator. It stressed that justice must be executed with transparency, integrity and without external interference or compromise.
CNSA: Central Nagaland Students’ Association (CNSA) in a condemnation note termed the incident as deeply disturbing, unacceptable and a grave violation of the rights, dignity and safety of a child. In a press release, CNSA president, by Zuchobemo Jungio, and general secretary, Imnayanger Jamir, expressed concern for the victim and her family, and hoped they would receive necessary support, protection and justice. It stressed that crimes against children have no place in society and must be addressed with utmost seriousness. The association urged authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation and ensure accountability under the law. It also called upon the community to stand against violence, abuse and exploitation of children, and to support efforts promoting child safety and protection.
CNSA further urged residents to remain vigilant against all forms of abuse and violence.
DAYO: Dimapur Ao Youth Organization (DAYO) has expressed deep concern over the reported incident and termed it as disturbing and a grave threat to the foundation of a safe and just society. Extending solidarity and support to the victim and her family, DAYO highlighted the profound emotional, psychological and social impact of such incidents, stressing the need for protection, care and support throughout the legal process. The organisation urged authorities to ensure a fair, transparent and expeditious probe with due regard to the rights of the victim and the paramount interest of justice. It emphasised that the sensitivity of the case demands urgent attention and diligence under the law.DAYO also called for collective prioritisation of the safety and well being of women and children. It expressed confidence in law enforcement and the justice delivery system, that the matter would be addressed with urgency, sensitivity and fairness.
WNYF: Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl and termed the allegations against the accused, Watimeren Jamir alias O. Wati Jamir, as extremely serious. WNYF said any act of sexual violence against a child is a grave crime and a direct attack on the dignity, safety and future of society. It asserted that such heinous acts are unacceptable and must be dealt with firmly under the law. The organisation acknowledged the courage of the victim and her family in coming forward and appreciated the support extended by the Chang Union Dimapur. Calling upon the concerned authorities to deliver justice swiftly and without prejudice, WNYF stressed that no individual, regardless of position, influence or status, should be allowed to evade the due process of law. The front also emphasised that the privacy, dignity and rights of the minor victim must be protected throughout the proceedings. WNYF further urged residents to join in condemning such acts and safeguarding the rights and well being of children.
ENSF: Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault committed upon a minor girl belonging to the Chang community by O. Watimeren Jamir and his accomplices. Describing the act as inhuman, shameful and barbaric, ENSF president, Nuheymong Yim and general secretary, James Konyak, said it was a gross violation of human dignity and child rights, and an unforgivable crime that shakes the conscience of society. ENSF asserted that crimes against children can never be justified, tolerated or shielded under any circumstance, and no individual, regardless of status or influence, should escape the due process of law. ENSF demanded that law enforcing agencies thoroughly investigate the matter, book the accused and his accomplices under relevant sections of law including the POCSO Act, and ensure stringent legal action without fear, favour or delay. ENSF further appealed to organisations, civil societies and the public to stand united in condemning such heinous acts and warned that any attempt to protect perpetrators of such crimes would not be tolerated.
DUCCF: Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has strongly condemned the incident and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a fair, transparent and time‑bound investigation and prosecute the accused under the strictest provisions of law. It stressed that justice must be delivered swiftly to uphold public confidence.
The federation further appealed to society to unite against such crimes, protect the vulnerable, and ensure the dignity and safety of every individual. It also urged the public to remain calm, allow the law to take its course, and refrain from disclosing the victim’s identity to safeguard her privacy.
AKM: Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) strongly condemned the incident, noting that the accused had been arrested following registration of an FIR. While appreciating law enforcement for swift action, AKM urged authorities to conduct a transparent and time bound investigation, stressing that no negligence or compromise should be allowed. It emphasised the importance of protecting the victim’s dignity, privacy and well being, and appealed to the public to remain calm, avoid speculation and allow the legal process to proceed without interference.
STD: Sangtamlarü Thsingmüjang Dimapur (STD) described the assault as horrific and a grave violation of human rights, calling it a stain on civilised society. It urged law enforcement and judicial authorities to fast track the case, deny bail under all circumstances and award strict punishment under POCSO. STD also appealed for safeguarding the identity of the minor while ensuring swift justice.
WM: Watsü Mungdang expressed outrage, describing the incident as a grave violation of human rights and societal morals. It stated that such acts shake the conscience of society and create fear among women and children. The organisation demanded that the investigation be expanded immediately and affirmed its unwavering solidarity with the victim, pledging to stand firm until justice is served.
CUC: Chang Union Chümoukedima (CUC) condemned the assault as barbaric and intolerable, urging law enforcement agencies to take swift and decisive action by booking the accused under non bailable provisions of law. It pledged continued support to the victim and her family until justice is fully delivered.
HRHAN: Human Rights Help Association Nagaland (HRHAN) described the act as a direct violation of human dignity, demanding a swift investigation, immediate arrest and strict justice without delay or leniency. HRHAN cautioned that negligence or delay in handling such sensitive cases would weaken public trust in the justice system and embolden perpetrators.
ENWO: Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO), Dimapur unit, termed the assault a grave violation of human rights and dignity, stressing that such behaviour was unacceptable in society. ENWO urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation under POCSO and emphasised that justice must be delivered without delay to safeguard communities and deter future atrocities.
LYO: Lengrijan Youth Organisation (LYO) termed the act utterly intolerable and condemned it in the strongest possible terms, stressing that crimes against children violate the basic principles of humanity, safety and justice. The organisation called upon law enforcement agencies to conduct a full, impartial and time bound investigation with transparency, and to ensure that the law takes its course against the accused. It affirmed its solidarity with the victim and her family, pledging support for justice, recovery and well being.
TYOD: Tenyimi Youth Organisation Dimapur (TYOD) stated that such “depravity” had no place in society and categorically rejected any attempt at out of court settlements, customary compromises or political interference that could dilute the gravity of the crime. Extending solidarity to the Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union Dimapur, the Chang community, and to the victim and her family, TYOD president, Sobalie Angami and general secretary, Sotilo Seb, assured unwavering support in the fight to ensure justice is swiftly delivered.
The organisation appealed to the authorities for: fast track investigation by Dimapur Police with air tight documentation of evidence; apprehension of accomplices, ensuring all associates of the prime accused are arrested without delay; stringent legal charges under the strictest provisions of the POCSO Act to secure maximum penalty and zero bail commitment, stressing that perpetrators must remain behind bars to prevent tampering with evidence or intimidation of the victim’s family. TYOD further called upon civil society organisations and citizens to rise in unison against such crimes and maintain vigilance.
ALT: Ao Lanur Telongjem (ALT) has expressed deep shock and anguish over the reported sexual abuse of a minor girl in Dimapur, allegedly by O. Watimeren, who, it said, had been entrusted with her care and protection as a guardian. In a condemnation note, ALT convener Imnaonen Pongen and co-convener Tia Longchar described the incident as a heinous and inhuman act that was an affront to human dignity and conscience, and condemned the alleged actions of the accused in the strongest terms.
ALT said it stood in solidarity with all individuals and organisations condemning the incident, particularly the Chang civil society organisations, and extended its sympathies to the victim and her family. It also appreciated the Dimapur Police for promptly registering the case and initiating legal proceedings under relevant provisions of law. It, however, urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and ensure that justice was delivered without delay.
Further, ALT called upon the state government to extend all necessary support and relief measures to the victim, including rehabilitation, psychological care and assistance for her safe reintegration into society.
