DIMAPUR, MAY 31 (NPN): Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has reiterated that corporal punishment and mental harassment have no place in educational institutions and called upon schools to ensure a safe, respectful and fear-free learning environment for students.
In a statement, DNSU president Hinoto P Aomi and education secretary Kevin Gonmei said schools were meant to nurture learning, dignity and personal growth, and any act that violated these principles would not be tolerated. The union said it had taken cognisance of several complaints received from students regarding such issues and expressed concern that similar grievances continued to be reported from time to time. According to DNSU, the recurring nature of such complaints reflected a worrying trend that required immediate attention and corrective measures.
DNSU reminded all educational institutions that Section 17 of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 prohibits physical punishment and mental harassment of students. It pointed out that violations could invite disciplinary action under applicable service rules.
The union further stated that acts of cruelty, intimidation or threats against students could also attract provisions under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, as well as relevant sections of the IPC.
DNSU also cautioned against any attempt to threaten, silence or intimidate students from voicing their concerns, stating that such actions amounted to abuse of authority and would be treated with utmost seriousness.
The union called upon educational institutions and authorities to strictly adhere to the law, uphold the rights and dignity of students, and ensure a safe, respectful and fear-free academic environment at all times. It further warned that any violation of legal and ethical standards would not be overlooked.
DNSU informed that complaints and queries could be submitted through its email address or official social media platforms (Instagram: dnsu.dimapur, email: dnsudimapurnagastudents@gmail.com)
