ENSSU highlights gaps in education, healthcare

DIMAPUR: Eastern Nagaland Sumi Students’ Union (ENSSU) conducted its first phase educational tour from May 26 to 30, 2026 under the theme “Ensuring Quality Education Through Collective Engagement.”
The tour, formally inaugurated at Phisami Village on May 26, was flagged off by Akukatou Vikato Yeptho, the first president of ENSSU, who urged the delegation to remain committed to the Union’s vision of promoting quality education and community development.
During the five-day tour, the ENSSU team visited schools, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs), government offices and developmental project sites. The exercise enabled direct engagement with stakeholders, identification of challenges and collection of feedback for improving public services.
Among institutions visited, Government High School (GHS) Sitimi Town was noted for its commendable academic performance despite facing acute shortage of teachers. The school currently lacks Mathematics and Science teachers, and has appealed for urgent deployment of a Hindi Graduate Teacher, Montessori Teacher and Physical Education Teacher. ENSSU urged the Department of School Education to address the shortage at the earliest.
In healthcare, the Union expressed concern over the PHC Seyochung, which was found closed during the visit, and called for uninterrupted medical services. Similarly, the Office of the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Sitimi was found non-functional, compelling residents to travel to Seyochung ADC headquarters for administrative matters. ENSSU urged authorities to post an EAC to ensure accessible governance.
The delegation also inspected the ongoing Lighthouse Construction Project at Sitimi, acknowledged its significance and expressed hope for timely completion.
ENSSU stated that the findings reflect both encouraging progress and critical gaps in education, healthcare, administration and infrastructure. It reaffirmed its commitment to advocate for students and the community, stressing that meaningful progress requires collective engagement, responsive governance and timely departmental intervention.
The Union extended appreciation to institutions, officials, village authorities and community members for their cooperation during the tour, and expressed hope that its recommendations would receive due consideration for the greater interest of the people.
