‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ launched at Old Jalukie

DIMAPUR: In alignment with the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” (Save the Farm Campaign) launched by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India on June 1, the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (CVSc&AH), Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Jalukie, organised the inaugural programme of the campaign at Old Jalukie, Peren district on June 3, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren and the District Agriculture Department.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. I. Shakuntala, Dean of CVSc&AH, underscored the urgent need to restore soil health, prevent environmental degradation and boost farmer profitability through judicious use of fertilizers based on soil testing and adoption of sustainable farming methods. She emphasised that scientific soil management is the cornerstone of a productive and self-reliant farming community.
Helingpung, Farm Manager, CVSc&AH Jalukie, highlighted the preparation of vermicompost and principles of natural farming, elaborating on the significance of Azolla as a bio-fertilizer and protein supplement.
Dr. L. Babita Devi, subject matter specialist (Animal Science), KVK Peren, reiterated the importance of sustainable farming for achieving a healthy soil ecosystem and rural prosperity. She urged farmers to embrace ecologically sound practices as a long-term investment.
Resource persons, Esther and Koko from the Department of Soil & Water Conservation, Government of Nagaland, created awareness on soil testing through Soil Health Cards, sensitising farmers on the importance of understanding soil nutrient profiles for efficient fertilizer application.
The campaign will continue with daily programmes across villages in Peren district over the coming weeks. The college reaffirmed its commitment to serve as a catalyst for agricultural transformation and farmer empowerment in the region, in the spirit of the national initiative.
