NGBF directs KTGBU to withdraw tax collection letter

DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): Nagaland Gaon Buras Federation (NGBF) has directed the Kiphire Town GBs Union (KTGBU) to immediately withdraw its letter seeking collection of “annual employment tax” for an underground group for 2026-27, stating that such activities fall outside the recognised roles and responsibilities of Gaon Buras.
In a statement, NGBF sought clarification from KTGBU after a June 4, 2026 letter titled “Collection of Annual Employment Tax for Underground for the Year 2026-2027” came to its notice.
According to NGBF, KTGBU explained that the initiative had reportedly been undertaken at the instance of certain groups of people with the bona fide intention of maintaining peace and social harmony in the area.
While acknowledging the intention behind the move, NGBF maintained that involvement in such matters was not within the mandate of the institution of GBs.
It said the federation had consistently advised all GBs and federating units to refrain from activities that could compromise the image, dignity and integrity of the institution.
It, therefore, urged all its units across to remain above such activities and exercise caution in matters that could affect the credibility and impartiality of the institution. It also advised federating units to seek prior guidance and consultation from NGBF before undertaking initiatives with wider implications.
Highlighting the historical role of GBs in the Naga political movement, NGBF said they had made significant physical, moral and material sacrifices since the inception of the Naga struggle. It noted that GBs and village councils continued to face various forms of pressure and obligations despite their important role in Naga society.
Reaffirming its commitment to preserving the dignity, integrity and neutrality of the institution, NGBF said it would continue contributing constructively towards peace, harmony and the welfare of society.
