Arunachal panel submits rules for anti-conversion law

ITANAGAR, JUN 8 (PTI): A committee set up to examine the draft rules under an Act prohibiting forced conversion in Arunachal Pradesh submitted its recommendations to the state government on Monday, 48 years after the law was enacted.
In a post on X, Chief Minister Pema Khandu thanked committee chairman Justice (Retd) Brojendra Prasad Katakey and other members for their work, commitment and dedication in completing the exercise.
The Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), which prohibits religious conversions achieved through force, fraud or inducement, was enacted in 1978, but the rules had not been framed.
The issue gained prominence after directions from the Gauhati High Court regarding the framing of Rules under the Act.
The committee was tasked with examining matters related to the implementation of the law and preparing recommendations for the government.
The submission of the report marks the completion of an extensive consultative exercise undertaken by the committee, officials said.
In his post, the chief minister also acknowledged the contributions of ministers Mama Natung, Balo Raja and Kento Jini, who were part of the process.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous Faith & Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP), a social organisation, has urged the government to take timely steps to implement the recommendations and notify the rules.
In a statement, the organisation said it would continue to monitor developments and, if required, pursue legal remedies to ensure compliance with the directions of the Gauhati High Court and the relevant legal framework.
Calling for constructive engagement among all stakeholders, IFCSAP said efforts to delay or obstruct the notification process through public pressure may not be conducive to democratic consultation and dialogue.
