DIMAPUR: The Dimapur Lotha Students’ Union (DLSU) has urged authorities to ensure strict implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, particularly the prohibition on the sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of educational institutions.
In a press release, DLSU president, Mhonbemo M Kikon, and vice president, Thungbemo W Kikon, expressed concern over the easy availability of tobacco near schools and colleges in Dimapur. The Union highlighted the health risks posed to students and stressed the need for a safe learning environment.
DLSU called upon the district administration, law enforcement agencies, municipal authorities and educational institutions to monitor and act against violators, while appealing to shop owners and vendors to comply with the law and prioritise student welfare.
It further emphasised that educational institutions must remain tobacco free zones, noting that protecting students from the harmful effects of tobacco requires cooperation among government agencies, parents, community leaders and civil society.
