DIMAPUR: In observance of World Day Against Child Labour 2026, Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) organised legal awareness programmes on the NALSA Child Friendly Legal Services for Children Scheme, 2024 across six educational institutions in Kohima district.
The initiative aimed to sensitise school children and teachers on child rights, legal protections, and child friendly legal services. Altogether, 10 panel lawyers, three advocates and two para legal volunteers conducted sessions, reaching 845 students and over 30 teachers.
At Chandmari Government High School, advocate Apila Sangtam spoke on the POCSO Act and child labour laws, stressing the importance of vigilance and use of Child Helpline 1098. At Government High School, New Market, advocate Nancy Lotha highlighted child protection laws, cyber safety and the right to education, urging children to remain in schools and playgrounds rather than workplaces.
At Government Middle School, Officers’ Hill, panel lawyer Viliezonuo Rhetso explained the harmful impact of child labour and sensitised students on mandatory reporting of offences against children. At Government High School, Midland, panel lawyer Kekhriengunuo Catherine emphasised child rights under the Right to Education Act, POCSO Act and cyber laws, encouraging students to speak up against exploitation.
At Chandmari Higher Secondary School, panel lawyers Tobonu Thecha and Asenla Walling delivered sessions on POCSO, online safety, child labour laws and the NALSA scheme, urging students to become advocates for child rights. At Government Higher Secondary School, Sechu Zubza, panel lawyers Haiyale Kath and Asenla Longkumar explained child protection laws, including prohibition of child marriage and child labour, while sensitising students on body safety and reporting mechanisms.
KDLSA reiterated its commitment to creating a child friendly environment, ensuring children’s rights to education, health, equality, protection and participation.
