DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, JUN 17 (NPN): Three separate sexual assault cases, including the alleged rape of an 87-year-old woman and two cases involving minor girls, were reported from different parts of Nagaland on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of three accused.
The most shocking incident was reported from Kiphire, where an 87-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a Nagaland Police personnel.
According to the victim’s nephew, the incident took place between 11 a.m. and 12 noon and an FIR was lodged the same day. He clarified that although the victim’s actual age was 87 years, due to documentation error her age was written as 56 in the Aadhaar card.
The accused is reportedly a neighbour of the victim. Family members claimed that police visited the scene shortly after the incident and collected relevant evidence.
The nephew further alleged that medical examination conducted on the victim reportedly confirmed sexual assault. Police sources could not be reached for official confirmation at the time of filing this report.
In Kohima, a 34-year-old man from Kohima Village, reportedly a church youth leader, was arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault case involving a 16-year-old girl.
The accused was arrested by Police and booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He has been remanded to judicial custody.
According to police sources, the case came to light after messages relating to the alleged incident circulated on social media platforms. Following intervention by District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and Child Welfare Committee (CWC), police conducted a preliminary inquiry and registered a suo motu FIR after finding a prima facie case.
Meanwhile, in another case involving a minor, police arrested a 29-year-old, a truck driver from Nagaon district, Assam, in connection with the alleged rape of a 15-year-old Naga girl from Kohima.
Police sources said a Zero FIR was initially registered in Kohima before being transferred to the appropriate police station for investigation. The accused was arrested on Wednesday from a village under Niuland district. Police said investigations in all the cases were underway.
