NSCW, CSOs condemn alleged rape of elderly woman

DIMAPUR, JUN 18 (NPN): Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation (NZPO), Senior Citizens’ Association Nagaland (SCAN) and Zeliang Students’ Union Nagaland (ZLSU) have strongly condemned the alleged rape of an elderly woman in Kiphire town on June 17, 2026.
In a press release, NSCW chairperson W. Nginyeih Konyak said the crime is cruel and inhuman, especially as it is alleged to have been committed by a police personnel, who was expected to protect people and uphold the law. It said the act has disturbed society and has shaken public trust in the system.
NSCW said the incident is a serious violation of human dignity and a betrayal of the responsibility given to those who are meant to safeguard the vulnerable. It added that when a person in such a position becomes the accused in a heinous crime, it damages faith in justice and raises grave concern about safety and accountability.
Describing the attack on the elderly woman as barbaric and unforgivable, NSCW said it reflects the worrying rise in violence against women and girls. It said crimes of this nature must not only be condemned but also met with firm and immediate action.
The commission urged the concerned authorities to ensure strict legal action against the accused and said the harshest punishment allowed under law should be given without delay. It also appealed to citizens to remain alert and help protect the dignity and safety of women and children in their communities.
NSCW said silence and indifference only allow such crimes to continue, while awareness and shared responsibility are needed to prevent them. It also expressed support for the survivor and her family and said it remains committed to seeking justice and pushing for stronger steps to ensure such acts are neither repeated nor tolerated.
KNSK: Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) expressed shock and outrage over the incident, alleging that the crime was committed by a police personnel, Heluikie Nsanglung.
The organisation described the incident as a grave violation of human rights and said it had generated widespread concern and anguish across the state.
KNSK said the alleged assault on a senior citizen highlighted serious concerns regarding the safety and protection of vulnerable sections of society. It further stated that allegations involving a law enforcement personnel were particularly disturbing, as police personnel were entrusted with the responsibility of protecting citizens and upholding the law.
Expressing solidarity with the victim and her family, KNSK said it stood with them during this difficult time.
The organisation appealed to law enforcement agencies and the competent authorities to ensure a fair investigation, expedite legal proceedings and take strict action against the accused in accordance with the law.

NZPO: Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation (NZPO) has expressed shock and concern over the alleged sexual assault of an elderly woman in Kiphire and called for strict action against the accused police personnel.
NZPO through its media cell condemned the alleged act involving Heluikie Nsanglung, a resident of Kendung village and a police personnel posted at Kiphire DEF.
NZPO described the alleged offence as a grave crime that has deeply disturbed the Zeliang community and said such acts were unacceptable in a civilised society.
Referring to Zeliang customary practices, the organisation stated that any form of violation of a woman’s dignity is treated with utmost seriousness within the community and attracts stringent customary sanctions.
The organisation maintained that the alleged offence was not merely a crime against an individual but an assault on human dignity and societal values.
NZPO demanded the immediate suspension and dismissal of the accused from service and urged the authorities to ensure justice for the survivor. It also called for a fair and impartial investigation and sought stringent punishment for the accused in accordance with the law if found guilty.
The organisation further expressed solidarity with the victim and her family and assured its cooperation with the investigating agencies whenever required.

SCAN: Senior Citizens’ Association Nagaland (SCAN) has expressed grave concern over the alleged assault on an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire and called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
In a press release, SCAN president Dr. I.P. Kala and general secretary Tingshem Konyak strongly condemned all forms of violence, abuse, exploitation and indignity inflicted upon senior citizens, stating that any act threatening the safety, dignity and well-being of older persons was a matter of serious concern and warranted the utmost attention of society and the authorities.
While noting that the matter remained under investigation and the facts were yet to be established through due legal process, SCAN urged the responsible authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and expeditious investigation so the truth was established and justice delivered in accordance with the law.
The association also appealed to the relevant agencies to ensure that the victim received necessary medical care, psychological support, protection and any other assistance required during this difficult period.
Further, SCAN called upon citizens, community leaders, civil society organisations and the media to uphold the dignity and privacy of the survivor and refrain from any actions that could prejudice the ongoing investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the rights, welfare and dignity of older persons across Nagaland, SCAN said it stands in solidarity with senior citizens and will continue advocating for their protection and well-being.

ZLSU: Zeliang Students’ Union Nagaland (ZLSU) expressed shock and outrage over the alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire and called for swift legal action against the accused.
The union through its media cell described the alleged incident as a grave violation of human dignity and a crime that runs contrary to the values of respect, integrity and protection of the vulnerable upheld by society.
ZLSU said the reported involvement of a member of the Zeliang community had caused deep anguish among its people. However, it maintained that the alleged actions of the accused were individual in nature and should not be associated with the character or identity of the community as a whole.
The union stated that the incident had brought sorrow and embarrassment to the community and stressed that such acts undermine the principles of justice, dignity and respect that the Zeliang people cherish.
Condemning the alleged crime, ZLSU called for the immediate suspension and dismissal of the accused from service in accordance with due legal procedures. It also demanded expeditious legal proceedings, strict accountability if the accused is found guilty, and adequate support and protection for the survivor and her family.
The union further urged all concerned authorities to act responsibly and ensure that justice is delivered without delay.
Stating that no individual should be above the law regardless of rank, position or background, ZLSU said crimes of such nature not only devastate lives but also erode public trust and offend the conscience of society.
The union expressed solidarity with the victim and her family and assured its support in their pursuit of justice and dignity.
ZLSU also appealed to citizens, civil society organisations and law enforcement agencies to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that justice prevails.
