United Sangtam Region flays rape of elderly woman

DIMAPUR: United Sangtam Region of NSCN/GPRN has strongly condemned the horrific rape of an 82 year old woman allegedly committed by Heluikie Nsanglung alias Amos, an Armed Branch Constable of DEF Kiphire, on June 17.
In a condemnation note, the region termed the act as “inhumane” and a grave violation of human dignity, stressing that no individual, regardless of position or authority, was above the law. It demanded a swift, impartial and transparent investigation, followed by the strictest legal action against the accused.
The note further called upon authorities to ensure justice without delay and safeguard the dignity and well being of women. It stated that the incident highlighted the urgent need for accountability, stronger safeguards and reforms to prevent abuse of power.
Expressing solidarity with the victim and her family, the region asserted that violence against women, especially the elderly and vulnerable, has no place in a civilized society and must be condemned in the strongest terms.
