Workshop on indigenous cow breeds held

DIMAPUR: A one day scientific workshop on “Conservation of Indigenous Cow Breeds” was organised at Veterinary College, Jalukie, with the objective of promoting awareness and strengthening conservation efforts for native cattle genetic resources on June 19.
Chairing the programme, Dean Dr. I. Shakuntala underscored the importance of preserving indigenous cattle breeds for sustainable livestock development, climate resilience and rural livelihoods.
Dr. Kathiraven P., Principal Scientist, ICAR NRC on Mithun, highlighted scientific approaches, breeding strategies and policy interventions required for conservation and improvement of native cattle populations. He stressed the role of indigenous breeds in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring long term agricultural sustainability.
Dr. Kedozul Ltu, Project Coordinator, Nagaland Livestock Development Board, shared field level initiatives undertaken in Nagaland for conservation and promotion of indigenous livestock resources through community participation and institutional support.
The scientific sessions were followed by an interactive panel discussion involving experts, academicians, researchers and livestock stakeholders. The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen efforts for the preservation of indigenous cow breeds.
