BJP rejects Jairam Ramesh’s remarks

The BJP on Wednesday rejected Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s allegation that the ruling party ultimately seeks to end reservation by securing a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.
The ruling party also took exception to his description of Jawaharlal Nehru as India’s best prime minister.
In an exclusive interview with PTI Videos, Congress general secretary Ramesh claimed that the ruling party first wants to push delimitation in the garb of women’s reservation, with the ultimate objective being of ending reservation altogether. Responding in one-word answers during a segment of the wide-ranging interview, Ramesh said Jawaharlal Nehru is the best prime minister India has had, while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is the best prime minister the country could not have.
Reacting to the remarks, BJP national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain alleged that while the country is progressing and developing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Congress has little to offer beyond criticism.
“Congress has nothing to offer except criticism. While the country is progressing and developing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, its leaders continue to make baseless allegations,” he said.
Hussain claimed that Modi is regarded as an ideal and a guardian figure by the country’s youth and asserted that the prime minister works for their welfare and future.
“For the youth of this country, Narendra Modi is an ideal and a guardian figure. He works for their welfare and future,” he said.
Taking a swipe at Ramesh, Hussain compared him to former Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar and claimed that just as Aiyar’s remarks had harmed the party in the past, Ramesh was now doing the same.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra rejected Ramesh’s praise of Nehru and alleged that the Congress leader’s assessment reflects the party’s viewpoint rather than that of the country.
“Jairam Ramesh may consider Jawaharlal Nehru the best prime minister, but that reflects the Congress party’s viewpoint, not necessarily that of the country,” Mishra said.
He claimed that Nehru was responsible for several historical wrongs, including the partition of the country and for imposing Article 370, and alleged that the Congress has concealed aspects of the country’s history for decades.
“Many facts about Nehru’s tenure were hidden from the people for decades. As these layers are gradually uncovered, people are reassessing his legacy,” he said.
The BJP MP asserted that India has made significant progress under Modi’s leadership and said the country had enhanced its global standing and economic strength.
He credited Modi with steering India through global challenges and claimed that the country is now on the path to becoming a developed nation.
“India is today among the world’s largest economies and is moving on the path of becoming a developed nation. These achievements have been realised under Modi’s leadership,” Mishra said.
