NEW DELHI, JUN 27 (PTI): United Naga Council (UNC) on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the deteriorating security situation in Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur and demanded a court-monitored probe into the killing of six Naga civilians.
Addressing a press conference at the Press Club of India, UNC leaders said they had submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking immediate intervention. They alleged that Kuki militant groups abducted 20 Naga civilians on May 13 following the killing of three Thadou church leaders. Fourteen were released on May 15, while the remaining six were later found dead.
UNC claimed that Naga village guards released 14 Kuki detainees on June 9 as a humanitarian gesture, but the bodies of the six missing Naga civilians were recovered the next day.
The council demanded a time-bound, independent and court-monitored investigation, arrest and prosecution of those allegedly involved, enhanced security in Naga-inhabited areas, and restoration of security along National Highways. It also sought a judicial inquiry into attacks since March and assurance that no administrative arrangement would affect Naga ancestral lands.
UNC urged the Centre to honour the 2015 Framework Agreement and alleged that recent incidents involving cross-border armed movement posed a threat to India’s eastern frontier. It also demanded that Kuki National Front-President (KNF-P) be declared a terrorist organisation and that the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant groups be revoked or strictly enforced.
The delegation, led by Ng Lorho, said it had also been meeting political leaders, civil society groups and other stakeholders in Delhi
