DIMAPUR, JUL 2 (NPN): Phek Town Council (PTC) and Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) have strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault on a minor boy by a man in Phek district June 30, 2026 and demanded swift legal action against the accused.
In a press release, PTC described the incident as a heinous crime against an innocent child and an attack on the values of humanity and the safety of society.
The council commended Phek police for promptly apprehending the accused and initiating legal proceedings. It urged the investigating authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation and ensure prosecution under the relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other applicable laws. Expressing solidarity with the survivor and the family, the PTC appealed to the public to respect the child’s privacy and dignity by refraining from sharing any information that could reveal the victim’s identity.
The council said the incident underscored the collective responsibility of parents, schools, churches, community organisations and civil society to create a safe environment for children. It stressed that there should be zero tolerance for crimes against children and that offenders must be punished in accordance with the law. In a separate statement, CSU president Povozo Soho and general secretary Rhilo Chiero condemned the alleged assault, describing it as a barbaric and inhuman act that must be dealt with under the strictest provisions of the law.
The union also expressed concern over what it described as the rising incidence of child sexual abuse in Phek district, calling it a matter of grave public concern requiring immediate and uncompromising intervention. CSU demanded that the accused be investigated and prosecuted under the POCSO Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and all other applicable laws without delay.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against children, the union called for a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation, protection of the survivor and witnesses, strict confidentiality of the survivor’s identity, and an investigation free from external interference.
The union said it would closely monitor the investigation and judicial process to ensure there was no delay, interference or attempt to shield the accused. CSU also appealed to the public to immediately report incidents of child abuse, sexual exploitation or violence against minors to the nearest law enforcement agency or the union, stating that timely reporting and collective action were essential to protect children.
