SHILLONG, JUL 6: The 14th Senior National Pencak Silat Championship began on Monday at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre, NEHU campus, Shillong, drawing around 1,500 martial artists from 36 states, union territories and sports boards.
Organised by the Indian Pencak Silat Federation (IPSF) in collaboration with the Meghalaya Pencak Silat Association (MPSA), the three-day event features competitions in both combat (tanding) and artistic (seni) categories. The atmosphere was charged with energy as athletes showcased their skills in this Indonesian martial art, which is also part of the Asian Games.
At the opening ceremony, a memorandum was submitted to chief guest working president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), John F. Kharshiing, urging greater support for the sport in the state and region. Kharshiing noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the finalisation of sports for the 39th National Games in Meghalaya next year.
IPSF senior vice-president Philia Thomas highlighted the remarkable growth of pencak silat in India, recalling its humble beginnings a decade ago. “Ten years ago the sport had no recognition, no infrastructure, no future… Now, championships are happening at the district, state and national levels and India is winning medals internationally,” she said.
Other dignitaries present included IPSF president Kishore Yealiah, MPSA president Dipshon Ryntathiang, and head of the tournament committee Alexander Thomas. A choreographed demonstration by martial artists enthralled the audience, showcasing the depth and artistry of the sport.
The host state Meghalaya has fielded a contingent, with young fighters eager to make their mark nationally. The MPSA, though barely a year old, has already achieved success, with Meghalaya’s women athletes emerging as overall champions at the Senior National Khelo India ASMITA Pencak Silat League in March. This championship offers another opportunity for the state’s athletes to shine on the national stage.
