DIMAPUR, JUL 11 (NPN): The Lt. Z Sukhavi Achumi Memorial Open Chess Championship was held at Hotel Acacia from July 9 to 11, drawing enthusiastic participation across categories. The valedictory function was graced by vice president of the Sümi Chess Association, Hoto Yeptho, who hosted the closing ceremony.
In the open category, Mr. Mughaho Awomi emerged as the champion, receiving a cash prize, certificate, and trophy. Mr. Kevilekho Zumvu secured the first runner-up position, while Mr. Bovito Yeptho finished as the second runner-up, both awarded with cash prizes, trophies, and certificates.
Consolation prizes were distributed to the top 10 players, with rankings awarded to Melesai Dawhuo, Salhuto Nyekha, Kughaho Kiho, Heilamgumbe Haikube, Thopimi K. Assumi, Khoveto Vero, and Akaho Achumi.
The Under-14 category showcased promising young talent. Vivaan Bhardwaj clinched the top spot, followed by Khrieto Terhuja in second place and Nizuto Siedzevituo Kakheto in third. All three were honored with cash prizes, trophies and certificates.
In the Under-10 category, Thejavituo Shuya secured first place, while Apishe A. Kiba and Kughuto Awomi finished second and third respectively. Each winner received cash prizes, trophies and certificates, highlighting the growing interest in chess among younger players.
The award for the best veteran player above 60 years was bagged by Otova Swu, recognizing his continued passion and contribution to the sport.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Tiqhetoli Achumi, youngest daughter of the late Sukhavi Achumi, while Rebecca Achumi pronounced the benediction.
The championship not only honored the memory of Lt. Z Sukhavi Achumi but also celebrated chess talent across age groups, from budding youngsters to seasoned veterans.
