ASF outbreak in parts of Kohima

DIMAPUR, JUL 16 (NPN): The Kohima district administration has imposed strict containment measures following confirmation of an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in parts of the district.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohima B. Henok Buchem said laboratory reports from the chief veterinary officer, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, confirmed ASF cases at Peducha village, Phezoucha L. Khel, P. Khel of Kohima Village and Razha area near Dzü-ü River along NH-29.
The administration has declared a 1-km radius around infected areas as an Infected Zone and a 10-km radius as a Surveillance Zone. Movement, import and export of live pigs and pork products within, into or outside the notified zones have been prohibited with immediate effect.
All pork markets and butcher shops in the affected zones have been ordered to remain closed until further notice. Pig farmers have been directed to restrict visitors, disinfect farms regularly and report any unusual illness or deaths among pigs to the veterinary department.
The order also mandated safe disposal of pig carcasses as per prescribed protocols and prohibited dumping of carcasses in rivers, water bodies or open spaces.
The public has been advised to remain alert and avoid buying or consuming pork from unverified sources. The administration warned that violations of the order would invite legal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other applicable laws. The containment order came into effect immediately.
