Mizoram Cong to hold statewide protest on July 21 against FCRA amendment

Aizawl, Jul 16 (PTI): The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Thursday announced a statewide ‘Black Day’ on July 21 in protest against the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, alleging that the legislation would impact the functioning of Christian organisations.
Addressing a press conference here, MPCC treasurer Dr Lalmalsawma Nghaka said the protest would be held across the state at noon.
The party has invited churches of different denominations and the general public to participate in the protest.
Nghaka alleged that the BJP-led Centre was seeking to use the proposed FCRA amendment to impose restrictions on the Christian community by tightening regulations on foreign funding.
He said the party would continue to oppose the legislation until it was withdrawn.
According to him, the proposed amendment would severely affect churches, NGOs and Christian organisations that rely on financial assistance from overseas donors for their social, educational and charitable activities.
He further claimed that after the BJP came to power, FCRA licences of more than 20,000 organisations have been cancelled, including several in Mizoram.
It also alleged that even churches are currently facing restrictions in receiving foreign contributions.
The Congress leader said that the FCRA came into force on March 31, 1976, was amended in 1984, comprehensively revised in 2010 to strengthen regulation of foreign funding, and further tightened through amendments introduced by the BJP government in 2020.
Nghaka said Christian organisations receive a significant share of foreign charitable funding and claimed that the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026 could disproportionately affect the community.
