DIMAPUR, JUL 17 (NPN): Maova Village Council (MVC) has expelled the accused in the alleged sexual assault of a minor from the village under customary law, while jointly condemning the incident with the Maova Youth & Studentsā Union (MY&SU).
In a joint statement, MVC chairman Demmang and MY&SU chairman Jangminlim Lunkim described the alleged assault as a āheinous, inhumane and immoral actā that was unacceptable in any civilised society and contrary to the values of a Christian community. They said crimes against children violate their dignity, innocence and fundamental rights and must be condemned unequivocally.
The two bodies clarified that although the accused, Paominlun Gangte, was a native of Maova village, he had permanently settled at Suporou Colony, Ward No. 9, Medziphema, after retiring from service and had never resettled in the village. As such, they said the village authorities had no knowledge of his day-to-day activities.
Describing the incident as a profound shock to the community, the organisations said the accused and his family members were summoned before the village authorities. Following deliberations and in accordance with customary practices and village laws, the council resolved to expel Paominlun Gangte from Maova village.
The council said the decision was taken to uphold the moral integrity of the village, reaffirm its zero-tolerance policy against
such crimes and serve as a warning that anyone committing similar offences would face the strictest action permissible under customary law.
MVC and MY&SU also expressed solidarity with the victim and her family and supported all lawful measures to ensure justice. They prayed for the childās healing and protection and for strength and courage for her family.
The two bodies urged the district administration and police to conduct a thorough, impartial and comprehensive investigation and ensure that the guilty are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
They also reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the dignity, safety and well-being of every child and called on society to work collectively to protect children from all forms of abuse and exploitation.
