DIMAPUR, JUL 19 (NPN): The Principal Secretary & Development Commissioner, Government of Nagaland, Y. Kikheto Sema, graced the inaugural edition of the Kohima Sumi Badminton Tournament as patron at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Kohima.
Addressing the gathering, Sema expressed happiness over the successful organisation of the event and lauded the participation of both senior citizens and youth, noting that sports transcend age and foster equality among participants.
He emphasised the values of dedication and discipline, drawing parallels between athletes and singers who devote countless hours to perfecting their craft.
Sharing a brief history of badminton, he described it as a friendly, disciplined sport with simple rules that promotes fitness and instills discipline. He commended the participants as among the fittest and most disciplined members of the Sumi community in Kohima.
Highlighting the sporting strengths of the Northeast, Sema observed that Nagas and Asians in general have excelled in disciplines such as badminton, table tennis, archery, sepak takraw and boxing. He encouraged greater promotion and nurturing of these sports, given the region’s natural aptitude.
Reflecting on the contribution of the Sumi community to Kohima, he recalled that the Aphuyemi Sumis from Pughoboto were among the earliest settlers in the town and played a significant role in developing landmarks such as the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and the Kohima Local Ground. He urged the community to uphold a strong sense of belonging, foster peaceful coexistence with the Angami community, and continue promoting mutual respect and harmony.
Concluding his address, Sema wished the tournament success and expressed hope that it would grow into a prestigious sporting event in the years ahead.
Organised by the Kohima Sumi Badminton Enthusiasts, the inaugural edition attracted 26 participants. The oldest competitor was 78 years old, while the youngest was 26, underscoring the tournament’s inclusivity and appeal across generations.
