NEW DELHI, JUL 19 (AGENCIES): Parliament’s Monsoon Session begins Monday with the government and the Opposition headed for a confrontation over priorities.
The Opposition plans to demand discussions on the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and the Ayodhya Ram Mandir donation controversy, while the government is expected to push its legislative agenda, including the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill.
The session, scheduled till August 13, comes at a politically significant time, with the NDA seeking to consolidate its numbers in Parliament after recent defections from opposition parties, while the INDIA bloc faces internal strains.
At the all-party meeting on Sunday, Opposition leaders pressed for an immediate debate on the NEET issue and the Ram Mandir donation row. The government, however, maintained that legislative business would take precedence and is expected to defend its handling of the NEET controversy.
The Centre is set to introduce five new Bills: the Income-tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026; Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026; Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026; Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026; and the MSME Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026. It will also seek passage of the pending Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, and the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025.
Though not listed for the opening phase, the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill on women’s reservation and delimitation is expected to remain in focus. The Bill seeks to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women by the 2029 general elections through delimitation and an increase in Lok Sabha strength.
Another key development will be the Speaker’s rulings on petitions involving rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), which could further affect parliamentary arithmetic.
