NTA and ZTO call for mandatory engagement of certified local guides

DIMAPUR): Members of the Nagaland Tourism Association (NTA), currently on a familiarisation tour under a capacity building programme to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, held a meeting with the Ziro Tourism Organisation (ZTO) in Lower Subansiri district on July 17 and jointly called for the mandatory engagement of certified local tourist guides to strengthen responsible tourism across the Northeast.
The NTA delegation has already visited Namsai and Pasighat as part of its tour aimed at exploring tourism potential while fostering cooperation among stakeholders of neighbouring states.
The meeting, held at the residence of ZTO chairman Hibu Tatu, focused on the vital role of local tourist guides in enhancing visitor experiences. Both organisations emphasised that guides are not merely route navigators but ambassadors of their destinations, creating lasting impressions through knowledge, professionalism and hospitality.
Discussions highlighted that certified guides play a crucial role in interpreting the history, culture, traditions and natural heritage of their destinations, enabling visitors to gain deeper understanding of local communities while promoting respect for indigenous customs and the environment.
Recognising the need to improve tourism standards in the Northeast, ZTO chairman Hibu Tatu, NTA president Vimeto Vakha and NTA general secretary Veshehu Kezo jointly advocated for mandatory engagement of certified guides.
They noted that such a measure would preserve cultural authenticity, enhance visitor safety and create sustainable employment opportunities for local youth, thereby contributing to community development.
The meeting concluded with both organisations reaffirming their commitment to work together for the growth of sustainable and community based tourism in the Northeast. They pledged to strengthen collaboration in promoting responsible travel practices that protect the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage while ensuring inclusive and long term economic benefits for local communities.
