DIMAPUR: Department of Social Work, St. Joseph University, Chümoukedima, organised a Rural Camp for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) III Semester students at Alaphumi Village, Zunheboto district, from July 11 to 18, 2026 under the theme “Campus to Community: From Notes to Nurture.”
The camp aimed to bridge classroom learning with real life community engagement by enabling students to understand rural life, identify community needs and contribute through meaningful service. Over eight days, participants engaged in educational, developmental and awareness activities promoting social responsibility, teamwork and community participation.
The programme commenced with a meeting attended by village leaders, faculty members and students, where the objectives and schedule were explained. A major activity was the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercise, during which students and villagers prepared social and resource maps along with a seasonal diagram. These tools helped identify households, community facilities, natural resources and seasonal livelihood patterns, encouraging community participation and providing practical exposure to rural planning.
A socio economic and health survey was also conducted, covering family composition, occupation, education, sanitation, drinking water, healthcare access and common health concerns. To raise awareness, students staged a street play on substance abuse, highlighting the harmful effects of alcohol and drug addiction and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Skill development sessions were organised for school going children, including crochet lessons and interactive activities to enhance communication, leadership, teamwork and creativity. A cleanliness drive was undertaken in collaboration with villagers to promote sanitation and environmental hygiene.
The camp concluded with a vibrant cultural exchange programme featuring traditional songs, dances and performances by both students and villagers, fostering mutual respect and celebrating cultural diversity.
