Sikkim Assembly passes three amendment bills

Gangtok, Jul 22 (PTI): Sikkim Assembly on Wednesday passed three amendment bills, adopted a government resolution and approved the demands for grants of several departments on the penultimate day of the Budget session.
The House passed the Sikkim Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education, Sikkim (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Sikkim Fire and Emergency Services (Amendment) Bill, 2026 by voice vote.
All the three bills were introduced on the opening day of budget session on July 20. The Assembly also adopted a government resolution moved by Forest and Environment Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha and seconded by MLA Sonam Tshering Venchungpa, seeking adoption of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Act, 2024 in the state under Article 252 of the Constitution.
The resolution said the amendment Act, notified on February 15, 2024, is applicable in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Union Territories, and can be adopted by other states through resolutions passed by their respective legislatures.
The adoption of the resolution is aimed at decriminalising certain provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, facilitating ease of doing business and streamlining the process of appointing chairpersons of state pollution control boards. During the financial business, presided over by Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa, the House also passed the demands for grants for the Buildings and Housing and Labour; Urban Development and Food & Civil Supplies; Health & Family Welfare, Culture and Ayush Departments and other departments.
