Dimapur, KA officials agree to strengthen border coordination

DIMAPUR, JUL 23 (NPN): Senior officials from the Karbi Anglong and Dimapur district administrations on Wednesday agreed to strengthen coordination along the Assam-Nagaland border by proposing a joint border monitoring committee and enhancing communication to prevent disputes from escalating.
According to a DIPR report, the decision was taken at a coordination meeting, held at Circuit House, Dimapur, attended by Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner Aranyak Saikia, senior district and police officials from both sides.
Officials underscored the importance of maintaining continuous communication between the district administrations and police to ensure that any emerging issues along the border are addressed promptly and peacefully. The meeting also acknowledged the cordial relationship between the two administrations and appreciated the prompt response of the Assam and Nagaland police in handling incidents in border areas, noting that such cooperation had helped prevent escalation and ensured the safety of border residents.
During the meeting, Assam revenue officials presented the historical and administrative background of the disputed areas, citing district boundary notifications, revenue records and census documents.
They maintained that the villages concerned had long been part of Assam’s notified administrative jurisdiction and had been included in electoral rolls and census operations for decades.
Despite differing claims over the disputed areas, both sides agreed that maintaining peace on the ground remained the immediate priority. Officials stressed that regular dialogue, people-to-people contact and mutual trust were essential to prevent misunderstandings and resolve local issues before they escalated.
As a confidence-building measure, the two sides proposed constituting a joint border monitoring committee comprising district officials, police personnel and representatives of the affected border villages. The committee would monitor developments, jointly respond to incidents and facilitate dialogue between communities while maintaining the existing status quo until the dispute is settled by the competent authorities.
Officials also agreed that visits to sensitive border locations should be conducted jointly by the administrations and police of both states to promote transparency and avoid misunderstandings.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue, coordinated action and peaceful coexistence, while agreeing that regular communication and mutual cooperation remained the most effective means of preserving harmony along the Assam-Nagaland border.
