DIMAPUR, JUL 23 (NPN): Flash floods and landslides have devastated Naginimora and surrounding areas, displacing more than 260 families, claiming one life, injuring five others, and cutting off several villages from the rest of Mon district.
According to Longshing Konyak from Naginimora, the floods destroyed numerous houses and swept away household belongings, leaving hundreds of families in urgent need of relief. One person died in the disaster, while five others sustained injuries, including one reported to be in critical condition. Dikhu River has risen to a dangerously high level, severely damaging the abutment of the Dikhu Bridge and forcing authorities to close the bridge to all traffic as a precaution. The extent of damage to houses, agricultural land and other property is yet to be fully assessed as district authorities continue rescue and rehabilitation operations.
The 6 NAP Camp has been cut off following multiple landslides, while roads to Upper Tiru, Lower Tiru, Kongan, Wakching and Shetap remain blocked despite ongoing clearance efforts.
Flooding in neighbouring Assam has also disrupted the transportation of essential commodities, resulting in critically low stocks of food and other necessities. Although emergency relief is being provided, supplies remain inadequate. Many affected families lost all their belongings and urgently require food, safe drinking water, clothing, medicines, blankets and other essential items.
Damaged roads are also expected to affect students when schools reopen after the summer vacation, hampering transportation and access to educational institutions.
