DIMAPUR: District Management Unit (DMU), Peren under the Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP), in collaboration with ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, organised a one day training programme on “Care and Management of Livestock & Poultry” for Self Help Group (SHG) members from NFMP Batch II villages at the Council Hall, Peren Village on July 27.
Held under the theme “Nurturing Sustainable Growth for Progressive Future,” the programme aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of SHG members in scientific livestock and poultry management to improve rural livelihoods and income generation.
Resource person Dr. L. Babita Devi, CTO (Animal Science), KVK Peren, educated participants on the importance of maintaining proper farm records for monitoring expenses and profitability. She conducted technical sessions on scientific piggery and poultry management, highlighting pig breed improvement through crossbreeding, piglet care, disease prevention, vaccination schedules, hygiene management and insurance facilities available through NSRLM. Participants were also informed about the recent development of the African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine and best practices for maintaining healthy piggery units.
On poultry management, Dr. Devi discussed suitable backyard breeds, vaccination protocols, nutritional management and disease prevention measures. Farmers were advised to maintain biosecurity, especially during the disease prone months of February and March, and to isolate infected birds to prevent spread. The programme commenced with an opening prayer by Mateichile, followed by a welcome address from Liangsi Niumai, Team Leader, FNGO, C CERP. An interactive session facilitated byMosonio Chachei, Field Coordinator, enabled participants to discuss field level challenges and seek technical guidance. The feedback session was led by Khuni Newmai, Convergence Expert, where participants expressed appreciation for the practical and informative nature of the training.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Suibamle, secretary, Kesamsang SHG, and a closing prayer by Heilam, SHG Representative to JFMC.
