DIMAPUR: Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police Krodi Rhetso, and officials from the District Administration, PWD (R&B), National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO), Phesama Village Council and other stakeholders, inspected the Phesama sinking zone along the Kohima–Mao section of National Highway-2 on July 30, 2026.
According to a DIPR report, the inspection covered the affected stretch between Chainage Km 191+840 to Km 192+100, where officials reviewed the prevailing road condition and discussed immediate measures to ensure commuter safety while maintaining traffic flow. It was decided that machinery for continuous debris clearance will be stationed at the site to facilitate uninterrupted movement of vehicles.
To enhance safety, two lighting units and traffic warning placards will be installed at both ends of the sinking zone to monitor possible rockfalls and alert travellers.
Deputy Commissioner Buchem informed that debris clearance operations will continue regularly, with a full-day clearance drive scheduled for Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. He encouraged commuters, especially those travelling at night, to use the alternative route via Kisama.
Traffic police personnel will be deployed at the site to regulate vehicle movement and ensure smooth traffic management.
The DC urged officials stationed at the affected stretch to remain in constant communication with the District Administration and Police. He encouraged them to take timely decisions, including temporary road closures when necessary, in the interest of public safety.
