WOKHA, JUL 30 (NPN): Continuous rainfall triggered multiple landslides across Wokha district on Thursday, damaging infrastructure and disrupting road connectivity, with Wokha-Merapani road—an important link to Sanis and Bhandari subdivisions—once again bearing the brunt of the monsoon.
One of the worst-hit locations was Sanis ‘0’ Point, where a landslide early Thursday sent large boulders and debris crashing onto the road, stranding several vehicles.
Commuters manually cleared rocks to create a narrow passage, allowing only two-wheelers to cross while larger vehicles remained stranded.
Another mudslide between Chüdi and Longtsüng villages in Sanis subdivision blocked vehicular movement, while continuous rainfall also caused two electricity poles to collapse.
According to LMRPO, restoration work was underway under the supervision of the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Sanis to restore traffic at the earliest. The latest incidents have once again highlighted the vulnerability of Wokha-Merapani road, which has repeatedly suffered damage during the monsoon due to soil erosion beneath the roadway and recurring mudslides from adjoining hill slopes. Prolonged disruption on the route could isolate several villages from the district headquarters, affecting the movement of people, essential commodities and emergency services. Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution while travelling along the affected stretches until road clearance and restoration work was completed.
