Chumoukedima to enforce ban on SUP from Aug 1

DIMAPUR: In a major step towards environmental protection, the Deputy Commissioner of Chumoukedima, Polan John, has issued an order prohibiting the use of single-use plastic (SUP) items and plastic bottles in the district with effect from August 1, 2026. The directive follows the Home Department’s General Administration Branch notification, aimed at tackling the ecological challenges posed by rampant plastic use.
To facilitate clearance of existing stock, the order provides a three-week relaxation period from the date of issue. After this period, strict enforcement of the ban will commence across the district. Authorities have been instructed to ensure compliance and raise public awareness about the ban.
The ban covers a wide range of single-use plastic products, including: Plastic carry bags; plastic cutlery such as plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws; thermocol products; polythene, nylon, PVC, polypropylene and polystyrene items; flex banners and posters used during government functions; plastic sticks used for balloons and flags; plastic trays, wrapping and packing films; PVC banners below 100 microns; packaged drinking water bottles below 20 litres capacity used during meetings, functions, seminars and for personal consumption.
