DIMAPUR: The four-day Tsüngremmung Festival 2026 commenced at Longsa Village on Friday evening with a vibrant Cultural Competition at the Community Hall, bringing together villagers in celebration of the Ao Naga heritage.
Organised by the Longsa Village Council (LVC) under the patronage of the Department of Tourism, Government of Nagaland, the inaugural programme was graced by minister for Rural Development & SIRD, Metsübo Jamir, as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Metsübo stressed the importance of preserving the originality and authenticity of Longsa’s cultural heritage. He said Longsa’s culture is indivisible and urged the people to not alter or differentiate the village’s traditional identity.
Referring to the village’s history, he emphasised that Longsa has inherited a unique cultural legacy that must remain intact. He added that traditional attire, customs and practices should not be modified to suit changing trends but preserved in their original form.
“Culture remains the same; it is the people who uphold and showcase it,” Metsübo remarked, urging villagers to take pride in their costumes, language and customs. He described the Longsa dialect and cultural heritage as invaluable assets that must be safeguarded for future generations.
The highlight of the inaugural programme was the Cultural Competition, featuring two traditional events-Wadang Ken (Ladies) and Lidem Meyu (Men). Enthusiastic participation was witnessed from the village’s four khels along with the Mokokchung Unit, with five teams competing in each category.
In the Wadang Ken competition, Lion’s Club emerged champion, while the Mokokchung Unit secured runners up. In the Lidem Meyu competition, Eagle Club claimed top honours, with Lion’s Club finishing runners up. Winners of both categories will represent their events during the main Tsüngremmung Festival celebration on Saturday. Cash prizes were also presented to winners and runners up.
The inaugural programme featured a performance of Ku Kongki (traditional cup violin) by Alemyongba, followed by prize distribution. The vote of thanks was delivered by Jongpongtemshi Tatar.
The Tsüngremmung Festival 2026 will continue at Longsa Village until August 3, featuring a series of cultural and traditional events celebrating the village’s heritage.
