Atuo Mezhür Sekhose Super League launched

KOHIMA, JUL 31 (NPN): The inaugural Atuo Mezhür Sekhose Super League (AMSSL) 2026 was formally launched with a slot allotment ceremony at 2K Hotel, Kohima, on Friday, marking a major step towards promoting football in Nagaland while honouring the legacy of late Atuo Mezhür Sekhose.
The league, organised by the Kohima District Football Association (KDFA), will feature five teams—Mez & Co, Sechü Zubza FC, Tsütuonuomia Youth Organisation, Nurturing Youngsters FC and Vanguard Academy and will be held from August 12 to 29 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. Four of the participating teams are from Kohima district, while Vanguard Academy represents Tseminyu district.
Speaking as the special guest, Director of Economics and Statistics, Neidilhou Keditsu, described the launch as a landmark initiative that could transform the football landscape of the state.
Expressing confidence in the league’s long-term vision, Keditsu said it would serve as a platform to identify and nurture talented footballers capable of representing Nagaland and the country at higher levels.
“We want this league to produce players whom we can proudly call the Messi of Nagaland, the Ronaldo of Nagaland, or even the Bhaichung Bhutia of Nagaland,” he said, adding that the development of young footballers would strengthen Nagaland’s presence in national and international football.
Keditsu also lauded the family of late Atuo Mezhür Sekhose for carrying forward his legacy through the tournament. Describing Sekhose as a philanthropist who devoted his life to serving society and uplifting the underprivileged, he said the league was a fitting tribute to his contributions.
He urged participating clubs, players and team owners to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and work together to make the inaugural edition a memorable event for football lovers across the state.
Earlier, delivering the welcome address, KDFA general secretary Viliebeizo Liezietsu said the launch marked not only the beginning of a football tournament but also a new chapter in the football history of Kohima district. He said the league was inspired by the vision and lifelong dedication of late Atuo Mezhür Sekhose and aimed to strengthen football clubs, nurture young talent and contribute to the overall growth of the sport in Nagaland.
Presenting the league preamble, KDFA technical director Kevilebei Zashümo described the tournament as a celebration of remembrance, gratitude and football. He said the passion, vision and dedication of late Sekhose had left a lasting impact on the football community and that the league would provide aspiring footballers with opportunities to develop their skills and showcase their talent.
Emphasising that the tournament was about more than competition, Zashümo said it would also promote discipline, teamwork, leadership, healthy lifestyles and stronger community bonds. He called on players, coaches, officials and supporters to uphold sportsmanship and mutual respect throughout the competition.
The programme was chaired by KDFA press secretary Medolenuo Loucü, while the invocation was offered by senior pastor, Ao Baptist Church, Kohima Rev. Sentisashi Aier.
