DIMAPUR, AUG 6 (NPN): Nagaland Tribal Hohos Coordination Committee (NTHCC) has urged the state government to intensify disaster response, accelerate road restoration and provide timely relief and compensation to people affected by the ongoing monsoon calamities across the state.
NTHCC through its media cell expressed grief over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by landslides and flash floods, particularly in Mon and Mokokchung districts, and extended condolences to the bereaved families while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
NTHCC said the continuing disasters had disrupted normal life across the state by cutting off road connectivity, isolating villages, damaging public infrastructure and affecting homes, farmlands and livelihoods.
Appreciating the initiatives taken by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, the state government, district administrations, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and frontline agencies, the committee said the scale of the disaster required a more intensified and coordinated response. NTHCC urged the state government to strengthen round-the-clock disaster preparedness, emergency response, relief and rehabilitation operations across vulnerable districts and expedite restoration of major roads, highways and rural connectivity to facilitate the movement of relief materials, medical assistance and essential commodities.
It also called for prompt ex gratia payments and compensation for families of those who lost their lives, besides financial assistance to households affected by damage to homes, farmlands, livestock and businesses.
Further, NTHCC urged the state government to ensure greater accountability from road construction agencies and contractors by maintaining adequate manpower, machinery and emergency preparedness to clear landslides and restore connectivity without delay.
The committee also sought transparent damage assessments, deployment of additional machinery and technical personnel in vulnerable districts, and strengthening of early warning systems, community awareness programmes and long-term disaster mitigation measures. Appealing for collective support, NTHCC called upon the tribal hohos, civil society organisations, churches, youth bodies and community leaders to assist affected families and cooperate with the government and disaster response agencies.
The committee reiterated its commitment to extending full cooperation to the government in relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts and expressed confidence that the state government would continue taking necessary measures to protect the lives and welfare of its citizens.
