DIMAPUR: A health awareness programme was carried out at District Hospital, Phek with the ANC mothers and lactating mothers on account of breastfeeding week observed from August 1 to 7, under the theme “Breastfeeding is a sustainable Start in Life: Strength What Works”,
A press release by district media coordinator NHM Phek stated that pediatrician DH Phek, Dr. Keduoneilhou Mere, delivered health talks on importance of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, its benefits for baby and a mother.
Dr. Mere also encouraged participants that breastfeeding provides complete nutrition to a baby during first six months which contains antibodies that help protect against infections, strengthens bond between mother and baby etc. He also shared that breastfeeding helps uterus return to its normal size after birth, burns calories, which may help with weight loss after pregnancy, promotes emotional bonding.
Demonstration on correct technique of breastfeeding was carried out by a sister from DH.
The breastfeeding week is observed every year from August 1 to 7 to raise awareness about importance of breastfeeding and encourage mothers in breastfeeding their babies.
During the 7 days observations, various activities to promote benefits of breastfeeding would be carried out across district in all health facilities of Phek district. The activities are conducted by CHOs, ANMS and ASHAs, ASHAs who visits newborns and pregnant mothers and educate them about benefits of breastfeeding, correct techniques of breastfeeding, discourage unnecessary use of infant formula, bottles and pacifiers etc.
