KU bans all forms of tax collection in Mon district

DIMAPUR, AUG 7 (NPN): Konyak Union (KU) has imposed an immediate ban on all forms of tax collection across Mon district in view of the hardships caused by the recent natural calamity.
In a separate development, the union summoned an NSCN-K (Angmai) functionary over the alleged intimidation and summoning of petrol pump dealers.
In a statement, KU president K Yamao Konayk and general secretary Wango Konyak said its executive council and advisory board had decided to enforce an immediate ban on all forms of tax collection across Mon district as local communities were enduring a severe humanitarian and ecological crisis. KU said villages and sub-divisions had been cut off, while flash floods and soil erosion had devastated crops, terrace fields and local cultivation, affecting the primary source of food and livelihood. It also said the disaster had resulted in the loss of livestock, paralysed the local economy, supply of essential items and affected educational institutions.
KU, therefore, directed that no faction, group or individual should demand, collect or enforce any form of tax or ration collection from any village, household or business community in Mon district during the crisis.
It further directed all village authorities, including Anghs, chairmen and village councils, to strictly enforce the directive and protect citizens from any compliance pressure. KU also directed all units and stakeholders to ensure that no pressure was applied on affected communities, stating that the priority should be immediate relief, infrastructure restoration and humanitarian aid.
KU, however, appreciated and acknowledged various factional groups and individuals who had extended humanitarian assistance during the recent disaster in Mon district.
Summons NSCN-K (Angmai) functionary: In a separate statement addressed to the chairman of NSCN-K (Angmai), Konyak Region, KU said it had learnt that the Mon District Petrol Pump Dealers’ Union had allegedly been directed by one Hapwang Konyak of NSCN-K (Angmai) to appear at his camp before August 7, 2026.
KU said the alleged directive had prompted the MDPPDU to call for a total shutdown of all fuel outlets in Mon district with effect from August 8.
Stating that it could not accept such cross-border summoning of business owners, particularly during the prevailing situation, the union said the alleged action was in contravention of KU’s resolution.
In view of the situation, KU said it had issued a summons directing Hapwang Konyak to appear before its headquarters in Mon within one week from the date of the letter to clarify his intention and explain the matter before the Union.
The Union said it was its obligation to protect local traders and petrol dealers and ensure the safety and uninterrupted supply of fuel and other essential commodities, which were vital for ongoing disaster relief and road clearance operations.
KU requested the NSCN-K (Angmai) authority to ensure that Hapwang Konyak appeared before the KU office to resolve the issue at the earliest.
