Nagaland Athletics Association marks National Javelin Day with Javelin competition

DIMAPUR, AUG 7 (NPN): The Nagaland Athletics Association (NAA) celebrated the 5th National Javelin Day 2026 by organising a javelin throw competition at Pilgrim Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, on August 7 to commemorate Olympian Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold medal victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from young athletes competing in various age categories, celebrating Chopra’s achievement as India’s first Olympic gold medallist in athletics.
Addressing the participants, NAA Senior Joint Secretary Purna Konyak said National Javelin Day is observed to honour Chopra’s landmark feat and to promote the sport among young athletes.
He expressed hope that such competitions would encourage greater participation in athletics while helping identify and nurture emerging talent in the state.
The winners were:
Under-14 Boys: Theau H. Buchem (1st), Meribemo K. Ngullie (2nd) and Mughakupu H. Yesca (3rd).
Under-14 Girls: Lihike M. Yepthomi (1st), Keleneinuo Kire (2nd) and Nikuvu Chishi (3rd).
Under-16 Boys: Lungousang Hengna (1st), Isuka Awomi (2nd) and Ngaminhao Doungel (3rd).
Under-16 Girls: Ilika Achumi (1st).
The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes, reaffirming the association’s commitment to promoting athletics and nurturing sporting talent in Nagaland.
