DIMAPUR, AUG 8 (NPN): A group of educated unemployed youth in Wokha organised an angling competition at Z Lotha Fisheries, Ekokju Village, on Saturday, with the aim of promoting recreational fishing, community participation and alternative avenues for livelihood and entrepreneurship.
The event, titled “Exciting Day of Fishing”, brought together fishing enthusiasts and families for a day of outdoor recreation and healthy community engagement.
Pipen Erui emerged as the winner and received a cash prize of Rs 50,000, while Shanpemo Kithan secured the second position with a prize of Rs 25,000. Aben Murry finished third and received Rs 10,000.
The competition was conducted under the “one person, one rod” rule. Special prizes of Rs 3,000 each were awarded for the Biggest Catch and First Catch, while 10 consolation prizes of Rs 2,500 each were also given.
The second prize of Rs 25,000 was sponsored by NSCN (R) president Akato Chophy as part of an initiative to encourage and support the efforts of the youth. The organisers also acknowledged support from individuals who sponsored the consolation prizes.
The initiative highlighted the growing interest in angling as a recreational activity in Nagaland, which is endowed with abundant water resources and diverse aquatic life.
The organisers said the event was intended not only to provide entertainment but also to demonstrate how young people could come together to create opportunities through initiative and enterprise.
They added that community-supported activities of this nature could encourage youth to explore self-employment and develop sustainable ventures around recreation and outdoor activities.
