DIMAPUR: The Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) led by joint secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, M. Ramachandrudu, conducted a series of briefing sessions and field visits across disaster-affected districts of Nagaland to assess damages caused by landslides, floods and flash floods during the ongoing monsoon season.
According to a DIPR report, in Mokokchung, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) held a briefing session at Tuliyong Community Hall, Tuli Sub-Division, on August 12. Chaired by ADC Imsenperong Wati, the programme featured a keynote address by DC & chairman DDMA, Ajit Kumar Verma, and a detailed briefing by Nodal Officer Temsuwangshi Jamir on disasters reported in 2026. Advisors A. Panjung Jamir (Fisheries & Aquatic Resources) and Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe (NSDMA) also attended. The IMCT later visited disaster-affected areas in Tuli Sub-Division to assess the ground situation.
In Longleng, a briefing session was held at the DPDB Hall on August 12, chaired by ADC & CEO DDMA, Thungchanbemo Tungoe. He described the widespread landslides that severely damaged roads and cut off the district from the rest of the State, disrupting movement of people, essential commodities and emergency services. Advisor NSDMA Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe acknowledged the coordinated response of the State and Union Governments, while DC Longleng, W. Manpai Phom and DC Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi, presented detailed reports on damages to roads, houses, crops, livestock and infrastructure. Joint CEO NSDMA Dr. Jhonny Ruangmei highlighted the multiplier effect of disrupted connectivity, noting that Indian Air Force helicopters had evacuated over 100 stranded students, elders and patients. He urged engineering departments to build resilient infrastructure capable of lasting decades.
In Mon, the IMCT visited on August 13 to verify spot assessments of damage caused by landslides and floods. MLA & Advisor NSDMA Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe expressed concern over the July 19 incident and assured that both State and Centre were committed to precautionary measures. DC Mon, Wennyei Konyak, briefed the team on continuous heavy rainfall that triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods, causing loss of life, destruction of homes, agricultural losses and blockage of arterial routes. A video presentation illustrated the extent of damage. The IMCT, accompanied by district officials, civil society representatives and police, visited affected areas including Defence Colony and Thamnan Ward.
In his remarks, joint secretary M. Ramachandrudu assured that the Union Government would take all necessary measures to restore normalcy in the affected districts. He acknowledged the scale of damage witnessed during the team’s tour across Nagaland and emphasized the need for timely restoration and rehabilitation. The sessions concluded with interactive discussions between IMCT members and district officials, and a vote of thanks delivered by ADC & CEO DDMA Tuensang, H. Berimong.
