Assam flood situation improves, no new deaths

Guwahati, Aug 16 (PTI): The flood situation in Assam improved on Sunday with the number of affected people decreasing to 51,000, while districts hit by the deluge remained at five, an official bulletin said.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin said no deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
The toll in this year’s flood stood at 104. Altogether 14 revenue circles and 170 villages in the five districts of Golaghat, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Dhemaji and Jorhat remained affected.
More than 51,800 people were still reeling under the deluge, with Nagaon being the worst hit (32,132), followed by Jorhat (7,426) and Sivasagar (5,676).
The number of affected people has come down from 62,000 on Saturday, though the count of flood-hit districts remained the same, the ASDMA bulletin said.
The administration was operating 14 relief camps, providing shelter to 1,731 displaced people. Another eight relief distribution centres were also functional.
A crop area of 3,628.17 hectares remained submerged, while 18,474 animals have been affected.
Damage to various infrastructure, including roads, has been reported from various parts of the state, the bulletin added.
