DIMAPUR: Advisor for Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan, attended the 97th Annual General Meeting of the ICAR Society held in New Delhi on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The meeting was attended by Union and State Ministers from across the agriculture and allied sectors.
In his address, Yanthan highlighted key issues concerning agricultural research, education and extension in Nagaland and the North Eastern region. He called for the establishment of a National/Regional Institute for Hill Agriculture and Climate Resilient Farming, preferably in Nagaland, and proposed setting up Colleges of Horticulture, Fisheries, Natural Farming and Food Technology under the Central Agricultural University (CAU) framework.
He also stressed the need to strengthen recruitment and infrastructure of all 11 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), including the ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, and urged expediting the establishment of new KVKs in the newly created districts.
Yanthan further appealed to ICAR to accord greater institutional priority to Nagaland’s farmers, youth and immense agricultural potential, keeping in view the unique needs of hill agriculture.
