Agartala, Aug 21 (PTI): Cuban Ambassador to India, Juan Carlos Aguilera, on Friday asserted that people of his country will not bow to any US pressure despite heavy sanctions.
Addressing a programme here to commemorate the birth centenary of iconic Cuban leader and former president Fidel Castro, Aguilera said the US has been “contentiously” imposing sanctions to “disturb the people of Cuba and its sovereignty”.
“Despite heavy sanctions, the people who love peace and believe in socialism nurtured by our great leader Fidel Castro, will not bow to any US pressure,” he said. Aguilera also recalled that Castro had visited India twice to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. Alleging that the US has been “trying to destroy the economy of Cuba”, the envoy said his country is in an energy transition phase from conventional to renewable sources.
“We have set a target to meet 30 per cent of country’s energy need from renewable sources by 2030. The Cuban government is also working to increase agricultural productivity,” Aguilera said.
Expressing gratitude to India for standing behind Cuba in the most difficult of times, he said the government of his country has decided to launch a massive campaign to woo Indians to visit Cuba.
