Agartala, Aug 26 (PTI): Tipra Motha Party (TMP) founder Pradyot Debbarma on Wednesday met Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and urged him to clear bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The TTAADC, constituted under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, exercises legislative, executive and administrative powers over specified tribal areas of the state. Bills passed by the council are required to undergo the prescribed constitutional process before they can come into force.
“Today, we met the governor and submitted a letter urging him to clear the bills passed by the tribal council for the Tiprasa people. We are also an elected body mandated by the people. If the Tipra Motha-run tribal council cannot implement bills passed by its elected representatives, people will raise a finger at us,” Debbarma told reporters after the meeting.
He said around 18 bills passed by the tribal council since 2007 are pending with the state Tribal Welfare Department.
The pending legislation includes bills relating to land reforms in tribal council areas, customary laws, recruitment policy and administrative reforms, he said.
Debbarma had earlier approached the Supreme Court seeking its intervention for clearance of the pending bills by the state government.
“Due to the delay in clearing the legislation, the tribal council has been unable to implement several key decisions on the ground,” he said.
The development comes at a time when the BJP is seeking an electoral understanding with the Tipra Motha, which rules the tribal council, ahead of the upcoming elections to Village Committees.
